Mineralogy is the fundamental information which defines not only the geology of an ore deposit, but also the interpretation of orebody genesis, and the response of ore from the deposit to mineral processing. Despite this, mineralogical analysis of ore has in the past has often seemed to be almost an afterthought, or something only undertaken during pre-feasibility or feasibility studies. This talk uses a number of examples to discuss the impact of mineralogical programs undertaken by different companies on ore deposits at various stages of development, and how mineralogical knowledge (or lack of) of the deposits impacted results (good and bad) and value.
