Geophysics in the Mining Operation: MEGWA: March 2014

The Mining and Exploration Group of Western Australia (MEGWA) is an informal, topical seminar series held on the third Wednesday of each month in Perth.

March 2014: GEOPHYSICS IN THE MINING OPERATION

Chris Wijns
Group Geophysicist, First Quantum Minerals

Drinks sponsored by First Quantum Minerals

Geophysics has a well-accepted role in exploration as a tool to reduce uncertainty in the face of sparse observations. This practice often lapses as exploration turns into resource modelling and mining, even though observations remain sparse relative to the volume of rock to be excavated. In First Quantum Minerals, exploration teams are very often involved in mine geology, and in this spirit, geophysics is pushed into resource modelling and operational roles. As a constraint on building resource models, or as a large-scale geotechnical tool for mine planning, geophysics can have a measurable impact in reducing uncertainty. This translates into an economic advantage that outweighs the cost of the geophysical surveying.

Provisional MEGWA talks

APRIL: Dave Isles (SGC), Exploration clues from aeromagnetics. Are you missing them?

MAY: John Sykes, Finding the Copper of the Future: Exploration Targeting for Reserves, Not Resources

JUNE: Wilson Gewargis, Mineral Potential of Iraq

JULY: Ravi Anand (CSIRO)

AUGUST: Andrew Jenkins, Sunrise Dam Hyperspectral Core Imaging Results

SEPTMBER: Justin Beltran (SRK), Remote Sensing on the Cheap. Free solutions to help cash-strapped explorers. The focus of this talk is to discuss ways to acquire and use freely available remotely sensed imagery, such as Landsat, Aster, GDEM, SRTM, Google, Bing etc… to plan exploration and conduct desktop studies.

The Committee is always interested in offers of an interesting presentation/story. If you have one you would like to share, please contact Jocelyn Thomson.
