One of the perks of being a geologist is that you get to travel all over the World (often with someone else paying the bill). In one 40 year period of my life, I lived in 70 different places. Exhausting but exhilarating. Of all the places I have been my favourite is Alaska. A run-in with a 500 kilo grizzly can only be described as scary, heart thumping, and yes exhilarating. Especially after it has left paw prints around the cook tent that were as big as an elephant’s foot. You are always armed when in the Alaskan bush – I carried a 44 magnum Smith and Wesson – and was supremely confident sallying forth into the bush. However, it only took the sight of that grizzly for me to pull the pistol from the holster, and watch it shrink down to the size of a toy. I thought to myself: I might as well throw rocks! Hubris can get you killed, especially in the Alaskan Bush. (There is something about being a dead geologist that is most unappealing!)
