We have all heard the exploration trends with respect to gold deposits: our discoveries are becoming less frequent, smaller, occur deeper and each decade it costs more to find an ounce of gold. Explorers have the choice of either sticking to mature belts, and drill to greater depth, or they can open up new frontiers. Such underexplored, grassroots search spaces, however, often come with challenges such as jurisdiction risks, logistical difficulties and high cost.
We make a case for going under cover and exploring belts that have proven world-class potential, in mining-friendly jurisdictions, and have been neglected due to one main reason: tens of metres of overburden cover, which hid mineralization from previous generations of prospectors. In this talk Attila Péntek from Wallbridge Mining Company Limited will focus on Quebec’s Northern Abitibi Greenstone Belt, which has seen far less exploration than the southern part of the Abitibi, where close to 120 years of mining has produced over 180 million ounces of gold. The recent Fenelon discovery demonstrates that the thick glacial overburden cover is not just a challenge, but also a tremendous opportunity.
Attila Péntek
Attila Péntek, Vice President Exploration of Wallbridge Mining, is a Professional Geoscientist with over 15 years of experience in the mining industry and economic geology research. Attila completed an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Geology and has been working at Wallbridge since 2010 in progressively more senior roles.
Since his appointment as Vice President Exploration in late 2017 he has been building and leading the Company’s geology team, through the successful completion of a 35,000-tonne underground bulk sampling program, and exploration drill campaigns totalling over 300,000 metres drilled. The team’s exploration efforts lead to discoveries that established the multi-million-ounce potential of the Fenelon Gold System and were recognized with the Quebec Mineral Exploration Association’s 2020 Discovery of the Year Award. Fenelon’s maiden mineral resource estimate containing 2.13 Moz of Indicated and 1.47 Moz of Inferred resources was published in November, 2021 and was the first major milestone in developing this new gold project.
