ASEG Queensland Branch talk for February 2016. Talk presented by Malcolm Cattach
Sub-Audio Magnetics is a proprietary, rapid acquisition, geophysical method which provides high spatial definition and / or deep penetration data related to both the electrical and magnetic properties of the earth. After 25 years of development and refinement, SAM is now a mature technology which can be deployed from ground and airborne platforms (including UAV’s). The presentation includes examples of high resolution MMR surveys conducted in WA as well as the results of a recent SAM FLEM trial at the Forrestania Test Range in WA and a HeliSAM FLEM trial over the Lalor VMS Deposit in Manitoba, Canada.
Malcolm Cattach received MSc and PhD degrees in Geophysics from the University of New England (UNE). He was one of the founders of the Geophysical Research Institute (GRI) which developed some of the world’s first rapid sampling, digitally recording Cs vapour magnetometers. These instruments led to the refinement of high-resolution field acquisition techniques for mineral exploration, archaeological and environmental mapping as well as the detection of unexploded ordnance.
Malcolm’s PhD focussed on the development of the Sub-Audio Magnetics (SAM) technique. SAM was conceived as a method by which the rapid sampling methodologies developed for High Definition Magnetic surveying could be utilised to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of electrical and electromagnetic surveying techniques.
Malcolm is Chief Geophysicist for the Gap Geo Group of companies based in Brisbane. He is the Managing Director of Gap Geophysics Australia Pty Ltd, Managing Director of Gap GeoPak Pty Ltd and Director of Gap Explosive Ordnance Detection Pty Ltd.
Malcolm is an Active Member of the ASEG and the SEG. He is the recipient of several Research Awards from the ASEG including three Graham Sands Awards for “Innovation in Applied Geoscience”. His career has been committed to the development, commercialisation and promotion of unique Australian geophysical survey technologies.
