‘Hera – an evolving story after 6 years of UNSW research’

Hera is a metaturbidite-hosted polymetallic Au-Zn-Pb-Ag deposit within central NSW. The deposit comprises a number of distinctive lodes with each having a distinct ore and alteration/gangue mineralogy though the ore mostly comprises various mixtures of sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and relatively common visible gold-electrum. It contained an undepleted resource of 3.6 Mt @ 3.3 g/t Au, 25 g/t Ag, 2.6% Pb and 3.8% Zn. This presentation will be a discussion on our changing views/opinions on the Hera deposit in terms of its stratigraphy and structural evolution; host, gangue and mineralogy and chemistry; geochronology; mineralogical and geochemical vectors to mineralisation and its genesis and evolution including new Ar-Ar dating of cross-cutting granite pegmatite dykes.

Technical Presentation

Dr Ian Graham

Ian Graham received BAppSci (1st class honours) and PhD from University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He was then a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where he worked on the initial stages of magmatism associated with the Bushveld Complex. Returning to Australia, Ian worked as a research scientist in the Mineralogy and Petrology section of the Australian Museum, Sydney, before his current role as a research and teaching academic at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. He is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT).
