IWD24 Panel Discussion – Inspiring Inclusion in GeosciencesThe AIG Victoria branch and WOMEESA (Women in Earth and Environmental Sciences in Australasia) are hosting a panel discussion aligned with International Women’s Day 2024, based on the IWD24 theme “Inspiring Inclusion”. Join us for this free event and hear from Adele Seymon, Angela Lorrigan and Leah Moore (and others (tbf)) on their triumphs, challenges, experiences and learnings they’ve encountered in their geoscience careers. This is an excellent networking and learning opportunity for all geoscientists to recognise and celebrate an inclusive workforce. SpeakersAdele Seymon Adele started her career as an exploration geologist, later becoming a government geologist. She has over 25 years’ experience in diverse roles across the minerals industry, government and finance sector. She has spent over 10 years developing, brokering and facilitating collaborative R&D and technology projects for the global minerals industry. She has a passion for improving exploration and mining operations, through application of best practice R&D. She is passionate about connecting organisations through programs that create positive and sustained change for industry and society. She is a strong advocate for diversity in the workplace and works to establish networks that support more inclusive communities. Most recently, she was Interim CEO for a round 24 Cooperative Research Centre bid focused on Copper for Tomorrow. She was responsible for development of a bid that would enable Australia to meet anticipated increases in copper demand locally, ensuring targets for the nation’s transition to clean energy are able to be met. Although unsuccessful in securing the grant, the collaboration brought together 54 mining and METS companies, government agencies and research organisations, from across the copper value chain, to co-operate in new ways on the development of technologies and knowledge. Alternative pathways are now being considered. Adele is Founder and Director of Deep Green R&D Solutions, helping create technical and strategic solutions to challenges faced by the minerals and related sectors. Adele is also immediate past Chair of the Melbourne Branch of the AusIMM. Angela Lorrigan Angela is an Independent Consulting Geologist, who is in the later years of a very rewarding, interesting and, at times, challenging career. She began as an exploration geologist in the back blocks of WA, then worked in gold and base metal mining and exploration in Australia and New Zealand, as well as some short stints in further-flung destinations. She is lucky enough to have made one greenfields discovery and contributed to a number of significant brownfields extensions. She became Australian Exploration and Geology Manager with Zinifex Ltd and then EGM Exploration and Geology for Diversified Minerals Pty Ltd before she retired from full time geology to become a consultant. She is married to Lawrie, they have two adult children, and are now expecting their first grandchild. Leah Moore Leah is a geologist with extensive exploration experience in the WA Goldfields, and Exploration Manager at KIN Mining. Her career has included senior roles with some of Australia’s premier gold mining companies and gold mining districts including Bellevue Gold Limited, CSA Global, Gold Fields and Barrick Gold, primarily in the Leonora and Laverton districts. She has a successful track record of increasing life-of-mine gold resources through exploration success and has a wealth of knowledge and experience. Ms Moore has 15 years of primarily gold-based mineral exploration experience on top of a Bachelor of Science (Geology) with Honours from UWA and a Graduate Certificate in Mineral Economics from Curtin. She is currently president of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG). Angus Rogers Angus is an igneous isotope geochemist rapidly approaching doctorship (or so he hopes). Raised on Dja Dja Wurrung country, Angus moved to Melbourne to study astrophysics, but fate had other things in mind, and he soon discovered a love for rocks and the chemistry that makes them. In research, Angus has studied everything from coral reefs to volcanoes to space dust, but always these investigations have been driven by curiosity, wonder, and a love of the natural world. Angus also has a passion for equitable education and is involved in outreach locally and regionally, having taught and mentored students of all backgrounds since 2016.
