CORE SKILLS FOR GEOSCIENTISTSIntroduction to core logging, data quality and interpretation3 day course – 17 to 19 July 2024
Course Co-ordinatorDale Sims, Director Dale Sims Consulting Building the geology framework from primary observations.
Attendance to this introductory course is open to current geoscience students, graduates seeking employment and recently employed industry professionals. It is also suitable for geoscientists seeking to re-enter industry after a career break. Our aim is to support members of AIG in their career development. AIG is pleased to announce an introductory 3-day course to assist core skills development for geoscientists. Now is a good time to gain exposure to practical data collection, QAQC, and analysis skills which will enhance your job readiness or effectiveness. The aim of this introductory program is to develop your understanding of data collection and data management, sampling, assay QAQC, data validation and interpretation processes through a practical core logging exercise. Building confidence in data collection and analysis is a key objective of the program. The course is not suitable for people already experienced and competent in core logging and or data analysis. Evolution Mining are strong supporters of this initiative and allow the use of their drill core at the Geological Survey of Queensland’s Exploration Data Centre at Zillmere in Brisbane. Attendees will log a series of holes on a cross section of the Mt Rawdon gold deposit investigating the main lithologies, relative timing of units, mineralisation, alteration, and geotechnical character. This data will then be merged with the mine database and used to produce a cross-section interpretation on paper for the section logged. A confidentiality agreement will be signed by all attendees to access this real-world dataset. In addition, it is planned to include a visit to a sample preparation lab, undertake a pXRF demonstration, inspect the Qld government’s Hylogger facility as well as review other scanner-based core logging processes currently being applied in mineral exploration and project development. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion from this course as an AIG endorsed program.. Numbers will be limited to ensure close contact between attendees and course leaders. This year we have obtained generous sponsorship from Dynamics G-Ex for the event to support 20 students to attend at a significantly discounted registration cost.
