28 – 30 March 2022
Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre
Welcome to the 2021 Bowen Basin Symposium website presented by the Bowen Basin Geologists Group (BBGG)
The BBGG has a proud history of presenting the Bowen Basin Symposium (BBS) every 5 years since 1985. The theme of 2021’s event is “Coal: Embracing Change and Innovation”. This is the premier event run by geoscientists, for geoscientists and associated personnel, who study, explore, evaluate and mine the occurrence of coal throughout the Bowen and other basins in Queensland.
The technical programme for the 2021 Bowen Basin Symposium is based around three themes over three days:
Day 1 will present “Back to basics” -type discussions, setting up the fundamental concepts that will be explored through the conference. There will be presentations on the history of geological developments across the Bowen Basin; break-out discussions to demonstrate the important role that Geologists play in this development; and workshops to ensure that we are all getting the basics right.
Discussions throughout Day 2 will build on this further with the theme of “Where are we now?“. Innovations that are currently being used in exploration and mining geology will be explored, and delegates will be provided with opportunities to update their knowledge on the main developments that have been introduced since discussions at the 2015 Bowen Basin Symposium.
The final day – Day 3 – aims to look ahead and provoke thoughts on the theme of “Where are we going?“. What is the future of coal? What challenges and opportunities will we be faced with as an industry moving forwards into the 2020’s when sentiments for coal mining and utilisation are being challenged on a daily basis?
Registration is now open.
Please put the dates in your diary, make plans to attend and contribute.
Look out for updates on what promises to be the most adventurous and exciting Symposium yet.
