A spotlight on Cambrian-Devonian Victorian geology – the Delamerian and Lachlan orogens and the formation of a world class gold+ provinceVictoria has produced almost 2% of all gold mined, globally, in the whole of human history. It is a globally significant gold producer, but most of that production was historic. As exposed deposits became depleted in the early 20th century it became difficult to discover new deposits with the technology of that time, leading to a long slumber for the Victorian gold industry. New science and new technology has underpinned a recent gold revival, and recognised potential now exists for more gold and a range of base and critical minerals. This talk summarises the goldfields geology, the historical geological challenges and the recent technical and theoretical advances that have, at long last, begun to lift the veil on Victoria’s hidden gold, leading to new deposit discoveries and the rediscovery of Victoria as a region with highly prospective geology. SpeakerRoss CayleyRoss Cayley is a senior geologist with the Geological Survey of Victoria. (Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action), specialising in structural geology, tectonics, and field geology. Developing large scale tectonic models to explain the geological evolution of SE Australia from the Cambrian-Carboniferous is a key research interest. Such models can provide an overarching context for mineral systems models and so provide predictive capability. Cost and RegistrationFree event (registration is essential – see below).
