ASEG’s Queensland Branch AGM will be followed by a talk by Henk van Paridon.
Petroleum geophysicists looking at coal seismic section imagine that it’s is just like petroleum data only smaller and easier to deal with. Rarely is that true. Each stage acquisition, processing and interpretation requires a degree of care to accommodate the downsizing of geometry and the upsizing of expectation required in the interpretation. This presentation focuses on the interpretation dilemma when the best developed coal reflector in the sequence disappears in a zone of otherwise good data. Losing your target seam may be considered quite careless. This presentation canvasses possible reasons and remedies.
About the Speaker:
Henk van Paridon is a geophysicist with over 30 years of experience and has been working as an independent consultant for the last 19 years. He studied at the University of Adelaide and the Queensland University of Technology. He is the principal geophysicist at Energeo Pty Ltd, a geophysical consultancy providing advice to the coal, CSG and petroleum industries. He is an expert in land seismic acquisition and interpretation with broad experience across a number of basins. He has consulted widely; from companies looking at continuous gas plays at 3000m in the southern Bowen Basin to advising on seismic methods for open cut mining. In addition to his consulting business Henk also provides training and mentoring services. Nearly 300 students have attended his seismic workshops over the last 5 years. He is a former president of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists and former editor of its bimonthly magazine Preview.
