Mineral composition trends in hydrothermal mineral systems inferred from reflectance spectra

Date & Time

Presented by

Dr Carsten Laukamp is a geologist exploring the potential for combined use of lab, field and remote visible and infrared reflectance spectroscopy, geochemistry and geophysics for tracing hydrothermal alteration signatures through cover and advancing ore body knowledge. He is with CSIRO in Perth since 2009 and is a group leader in CSIRO Mineral Resources’ Discovery Program and project leader of the National Virtual Core Library.

Abstract

Geologists analyse the composition of minerals to understand, for example, the evolution of hydrothermal mineral systems and to vector towards ore deposits. This presentation provides an overview of geochemical exchange vectors, as well as crystallinity indices and mineral hydration/hydroxylation that can be mapped using spectral sensing technologies from the microscopic to the regional scale. A number of case studies from regolith environments and hydrothermal mineral systems are presented to explore the applications of current and near-future spectral sensing technologies for exploration and mining.
