Our guest speaker

Julie Rowland

I’m a structural geologist with a passion for tectonic-magmatic-hydrologic interactions, particularly in rift settings. This sort of research is relevant to geothermal and mineral exploration, to understanding geohazards, and to understanding fundamental tectonic processes.

I’m the Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland, which is an awesome job because the people I work with are terrific, diverse of thought and culture, and they see the world through different disciplinary lenses. Currently, I am focused on implementing the new University strategy, Taumata Teitei. I’m excited about this because it lifts our emphasis on making a difference for society in four linked areas: sustainable ecosystems, health and wellbeing, just societies, and knowledge systems.

I’m also an inaugural Director of a new flagship research centre at UOA: Ng? Ara Whet? | Centre for Climate, Biodiversity and Society. In this role I am working across the University and with external communities of interest to undertake research and training toward a fairer and more liveable future.
