Helen Degeling, Caroline Tiddy, Rachel Durdin & Rick Valenta

Helen Degeling

Helen is the Director, Minerals Geoscience for the Geological Survey of Queensland. She has a diverse background, including research experience at ANU and the University of Calgary studying various aspects of geochemistry, geochronology and thermodynamics in metamorphic terranes. She also has 12 years experience in gold and base metals exploration throughout Australia and also parts of South America. This includes the Pilbara, Yilgarn and Gawler Cratons, the Mt Isa Inlier and the Lachlan Fold Belt. Helen joined the GSQ in 2018 and has lead the development of the New Economy Minerals Initiative in Queensland.

Caroline Tiddy

Caroline Tiddy is an Associate Professor in Geosciences in the Future Industries Institute at the University of South Australia. She is passionate about applied research that fundamentally impacts and advances practices within the geoscience industry and in developing the next generation of young, balanced scientists who will have the opportunity to engage in an inclusive workplace of equality and diversity. Most of Caroline’s research is within the Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre (MinEx CRC) where she is involved in developing new sensors for rapid collection of geochemical data and innovative techniques for using mineral chemistry to determine proximity to ore deposits. Caroline is Coordinator of the MinEx CRC Education and Training Program.

Rachel Durdin

General Manager, Sustainability and lead of Rio’s family and domestic violence work.

Rachel has worked at Rio Tinto for ten years across various disciplines including capital projects, sustainability, strategy, gender equality and stakeholder engagement.

Rachel is currently Rio Tinto’s General Manager of Sustainability. Rachel is responsible for the implementation of Rio Tinto’s sustainability strategy along with guiding the development how Rio Tinto can collaborate to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Rachel is an advocate for gender equality with a strong focus on the prevention of family and domestic violence and leads this work at Rio Tinto and is also a member of the Queensland Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council.

Rick Valenta

Rick Valenta is the Director of the WH Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre and Acting Director of the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre at the Sustainable Minerals Institute at The University of Queensland. Prior to that, he spent 23 years in Exploration and Development with major and junior mining companies in Australia and Canada in senior technical and executive roles. He has been involved in numerous mineral discoveries and research relating to exploration targeting. His current role is focused on maximising the value of geological information in the entire exploration and mining continuum, and on innovation addressing the challenges of sustainable metal production in the 21st century.

Daniel Muggleton is an Australian stand-up comedian based in Sydney. His debut special ‘Let’s Never Hang Out’ aired on ABC Comedy in 2019 he’s also appeared on The Feed (SBS) and The Checkout.
