We all have pretty pictures of banded, bladed and sulfide-rich (ginguro) epithermal veins, but there is also a methodology for the systematic description and interpretation of the textures in epithermal quartz veins represented by the well distributed cartoon. Empirical observations suggest that quite specific textural assemblages are characteristic of vertical position in relation to the boiling zone in many epithermal vein systems. The methodology can be used in the field to locate favorable zones for mineralisation, and in conjunction with structural, paragenetic, geochemical and alteration studies to predict the location of ore shoots.
Gregg Morrison
GREGG MORRISON was educated in New Zealand and Canada and did a Ph.D. on Cu-Au skarns in the Yukon and a post-doc on the Renison tin deposit in Tasmania.
He then spent 10 years at JCU Townsville leading Gold Deposit Research in north Queensland and Eastern Australia sponsored by AMIRA. One of these projects was on epithermal gold in Queensland following the discovery of Pajingo in 1984 and led to the development of the textural zoning model.
Gregg then spent 20 years as a global roaming consultant and trainer specialising in epithermal, porphyry and intrusion-related mineral systems.
The last 10 years he has been back in Townsville consulting locally and undertaking north Queensland mineral system studies funded by GSQ and in collaboration with Simon Beams at Terra Search.
Daniel Muggleton
