ABSTRACT

With notable exceptions the reflection seismic method has not enjoyed widespread use in the minerals industry, despite being the geophysical tool of choice for hydrocarbon and coal exploration.

The percieved high cost of the method together with the complexities related to high rock velocities and complex 3D geometries have confounded the easy translation of the method from ‘soft’ rocks to ‘hard’ rocks.

2D and 3D seismic case histories over VMS, gold and nickel deposits demonstrate that recent developments in the technology have enabled high resolution seismic to make a significant and cost effective contribution to exploration programs around known assets, including the direct detection of massive sulphides. Specific developments include: Higher fold acquisition and more sophisticated data processing; small ‘mine-friendly’ crews; and acquisition systems with lower environmental footprint.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Greg Turner graduated with a BSc(Hons) in Earth Science from Monash University in 1987 and received a PhD from Macquarie University in 1994. His previous roles have included Geoscience Manager for WMC’s Technology Group and a co-founder of the Geoforce geophysical service company. He is currently a Principal Geophysicist and Project Manager at HiSeis, which specialises in applying seismic methods to fast-track mineral exploration and improve mine planning.
