Abstract

Soil geochemistry has taken a back seat in regional and prospect scale gold exploration in recent years, due mainly to the failure of traditional methods to detect mineralisation well below the near surface regolith.  Over the last 15 or so years, Geoff has developed a set of protocols based on partial leach and total digestion techniques that offer promise to detect deeply buried mineralisation.

In support of these protocols, an explanation is proposed for the movement of metal ions from deep, oxidising metal concentrations (mineralised bodies) through to the surface, and explains why different digestion methods work for different metals.

Examples are provided of discovery and prospect rejection.

About the presenter

Geoff Turner is a Registered Professional Geologist and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists.  His academic qualifications included a BSc (Hons) from Adelaide University and a MSc (Exploration & Mining Geology) from James Cook University, as well as a Grad. Certificate in Ecology and Groundwater Studies form UTS.

He has over 40 years’ experience in mineral exploration during which time he held senior exploration management positions in West Australia and Victoria, principally in gold exploration, but also dabbling in exploration for base metal and Heavy Mineral sands deposits.

Geoff’s experience includes regional assessment to identify potential mineralisation models, the development and management of exploration programs, and mineral resource estimations in a wide variety of gold deposit styles.  Recent exploration program successes under Geoff’s direction include the discovery of gold + base metal mineralisation in the Jamieson district of eastern Victoria and the more recent discoveries of gold mineralisation under Murray Basin cover in north-central Victoria at Lockington, at Mitiamo and at Wandean near Nagambie.

Geoff has moved from Bendigo to the Bellarine Peninsula to enjoy retirement – but still manages to consult on a few projects.
