Leadership in the mining sector: Using phenomenology to understand inter-generational and gender differences in leadership values

Centre for Exploration Targeting Seminar Series Guest Lecture

Talk presented by Janet Sutherland.

ABSTRACT

Using a series of case studies, I will explore the lived experience of leaders and followers of different ages and gender working in the mining sector. Case studies include the challenges of Generation Y workers leading much older colleagues and women leading men in what is a traditionally male dominated industry. They also explore the experiences of young workers being thrust into leadership positions. I will focus on the sensemaking strategies that these workers use to navigate diversity, stereotyping and, at times, discrimination in the workplace. The case studies, and especially the sensemaking strategies, highlight opportunities and challenges for leadership in the mining sector. I will also discuss the benefits of diversity for innovation and performance and whether the future of leadership in the industry depends on exploring more flexible employment options and how we measure career success.
