NExUS-PD: Pathways to Discovery: Porphyry Systems
- NExUS-Professional Development (NExUS-PD) workshops are very proud to be able to offer a one-day online workshop focused on porphyry Cu-Au (Mo) systems presented by discipline experts.
- Sessions 1 and 2 are presented by Dr. Roger Taylor and will introduce porphyry ore textures (including principles of infill, alteration and brecciation), followed by a detailed summary of porphyry alteration styles and including overprinting high-sulphidation styles.
- Session 3 is presented by Dr. Steve Garwin and will cover the characteristics of Type I and Type II porphyry systems including fluid evolution, zonation, and the importance of magmatic conditions, sulphidation-state and oxygen fugacity to the development of metal endowed porphyry systems.
- Session 4 will discuss the importance of integrating geological and geochemical data for effective porphyry exploration and will provide work-flow examples, and time for discussion.
Session Summaries: (Each session approx. 90 minutes. Times TBC)
- Session 1: Coping with Porphyry Systems: principles of infill, alteration and brecciation
- Session 2: Coping with Porphyry Systems: porphyry ore textures, alteration styles, and associated mineralisation
- Session 3: Type I and Type II Porphyry Systems: magmatic and hydrothermal fluid sources, zonation, metal budget
- Session 4: Porphyry exploration rationale, geological and geochemical data integration and the Anaconda Method

Presented by

Dr. Steve Garwin
Dr. Steve Garwin is an independent consultant with 35 years of experience as an exploration geologist. He has participated in Au and Cu projects of more than 40 clients in over 20 countries, and is one of the leading authorities on porphyry, epithermal and Carlin-style mineralization in the circum-Pacific region. He worked with Newmont Mining for ten years, including two years as Chief Geologist in Nevada, and has authored/co-authored more than 40 scientific papers and abstracts. Steve has been involved in several, major exploration and mining projects, including the Batu Hijau porphyry (Cu-Au) in Indonesia, the Carlin and Battle Mountain Trends (Au) in Nevada and the recently discovered world-class Alpala porphyry (Cu-Au-Ag) in Ecuador.

Dr. Roger Taylor
Dr Roger Taylor has been involved with the exploration and mining industry for over 60 years operating as a practicing exploration / mine geologist and academic as Director of the Economic Geology Research Unit at James Cook University (1993-1998). More recent activities include international consulting, a range of professional development courses, and petrological services. Major publications include books on tin deposits, ore textures-breccias, and gossans-leached outcrops. Major interests are magmatic related deposits, including porphyry copper, tin, IOCG, and epithermal systems.
