About the workshop

QGIS Workshop will be run by Tom Carmichael, Mathematical Geologist, Solve Geosolutions.

QGIS is a cross platform, open source GIS package which has recently become a viable alternative to traditional GIS packages. This is incredibly fortunate for the mining and minerals industry due to the sustained downturn and typically costly and inflexible nature of closed-source GIS options.

At the conclusion of this course, the attendees will be able to:

  • Be able to describe the basic GIS fundamentals with relation to QGIS.
  • Demonstrate proficient use of the QGIS platform as it applies from basic to moderate operations with a focus on their applicability to the mining and minerals discipline.
  • Develop and awareness and ability of the fundamental concepts of spatial analysis, as well as the use of particular QGIS plugins to make geoprocessing more simple and time efficient.
  • Have the ability to create visual clear and concise maps using the QGIS print composer, in addition to gaining an understanding of good map making design principals and gain a greater appreciation for the importance of cartographic design.
