Talk Title

THE DISCOVERY OF BUSANG, INDONESIA – THE WORLDS LARGEST GOLD “DEPOSIT”
Joseph Ogierman, South Australian Geologist, co-discoverer of Bursang.

In 1995 Canadian explorer Bre-X announced that it had one of the worlds largest gold deposits. Its share price went from 30 cents to $280, until 1997 when it was revealed to be fake and the price fell from the sky, as did the Bre-X Project Manager.

Six years before Bre-X arrived, two geologists from Adelaide discovered this small gold prospect in the Indonesian jungle.

This is their story of Busang, pre- and post Bre-X, a tale of intrigue, adventure, danger, slander, greed, of future Nobel Laureates, back-stabbing partners and of course, of geology.

Presenter

Joseph Ogierman, Geologist

Joseph Ogierman is an exploration geologist based in Adelaide whose life changed forever as 9-year-old when he broke open a rock in the Flinders Ranges and found a fossil. He hasn’t stopped breaking open rocks in the many years since then, working or studying on 4 continents. His work has directly led to defined resources for precious and base metals, diamonds, manganese and iron, several of which have been successfully mined or are currently being developed.

About Bursang and the BreX scam

To paraphrase Franklin Roosevelt, Canadian junior, Bre-X Minerals will “live in infamy” for
undertaking corporate fraud on an extraordinary scale, reporting in 1997 the discovery on the island of Borneo, of the largest gold deposit in history – 71Mozs. A fraud which changed forever, on a global scale, the way mining and exploration companies undertake their work.
