Our next meeting of the year will be Tuesday the 18th October at the Regal Park Motor Inn in North Adelaide.
As usual we will have drinks from 6.30 to 7pm and our speaker will talk from 7pm with dinner starting at approximately 8pm. For those wishing to stay and have dinner can you please contact Adrian Brewer prior to Monday 17th so we can let the venue know numbers. Dinner will be at the KokoThai Restaurant on O’Connell Street, a short walk from the meeting place.
Our speaker this month is Lew Barnes who is going to give us a talk on MAGNESITE, THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY.
The talk will give a brief summary of the geology of commercial magnesite deposits and then discuss the major use(s) for this industrially important mineral, (the GOOD). I will then have a look at a couple of case histories from the magnesium metal mayhem period of the late 1990s and early 2000s, (the BAD and the UGLY). These attempted developments illustrate some of the problems associated with the development of new industrial mineral deposits in Australia.
Lew Barnes – Industrial Mineral Geologist. Has nearly 40 years of experience as an industrial mineral geologist, firstly with the then SA Department of Mines and Energy and then with Australia’s leading producer of industrial minerals. In that period Lew has been involved in a broad range of industrial mineral projects (including gemstones and dimension stone) throughout Australia, and in SE Asia and Turkey. Lately Lew has been consulting to Minotaur exploration on their industrial mineral projects. As an industrial mineral geologist Lew has not only been involved in the exploration for, and assessment of, industrial mineral resources, but also in the mining, processing and marketing of these resources. In many cases by selective mining and specialised processing products from a resource can be tailored to an individual customer requirements and the industrial mineral geologist is critical in determining the most efficient and cost effective way of developing a mineral resource.
All are welcome, so come along, and have a drink and a chat with your fellow geologists.
