The Realities of Environmental Insurance (or “Mind the Gap”)

Recent pollution incidences and the substantial clean-up costs serve as a warning to landowners and business operators to review their insurance coverage. General industrial insurance policies which you would assume would provide protection, usually give little protection for these events.

Environmental insurance policies can not only protect operators, but can also be used to provide effective risk transfer for known and unknown pollution on a site. These policies can be an effective tool to support property transactions and brownfield development on land which would otherwise be placed in the ‘too hard’ basket.

You and your clients need to be informed about environmental insurance policies because:

  • environment legislation is changing
  • cleanup costs are more onerous and expensive
  • existing policies may give you no protection
  • penalties for causing pollution are higher
  • as well as being able to exploit market opportunities in the brownfield sector.

The session will be Chaired by Andrew Mitchell, Manager Hazardous Incidents and feature presentations from:

  • Gregor Riese – Property & Risk Manager, OneSteel Recycling Pty Ltd (Industrial Operator)
  • Jasper Taanman, Senior Account Executive, Marsh Pty Ltd (Insurance Broker)
  • Emma Davies – Senior Claims Examiner, Casualty & Environmental Specialty – AIG (Insurer/Underwriter)

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A panel session, giving forum attendees an opportunity to debate and delve further into the issues raised by the presenters.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided during networking sessions before and after the forum.
