AIG’s Registered Professional Geoscientist (RPGeo) program is Australia’s most rigorous recognition program for continuous professional development by Australian geoscientists. The Registered Professional Geoscientist (RPGeo) program of AIG recognises Fellows and Members who have committed to the maintenance and continuous development of their technical and professional skills and capabilities. This commitment is widely recognised by employers. Importantly, the program provides a means by which self-employed geoscientists and consultants may demonstrate their commitment to continuous professional development to both existing and potential clients.

AIG’s RPGeo program is unique in Australia by specifically recognising experience in up to three fields of geoscientific practice.

AIG Mentoring Program 2025: Call for State Champion Volunteers! Nominations close Friday, 13 December 2024

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) is seeking volunteers to serve as State Champions for the 2025 Mentoring Program.

State Champions are vital to the program’s success, playing a key role in:
• Matching Mentors and Mentees: Reviewing applications and strategically pairing mentors with mentees based on their career goals and expertise (4-12 hours over April-May; more for states with larger number of participants).
• Building community: Organising at least three social events throughout the year (May-November) to foster connections and networking amongst participants.
• Collaboration and support: Attending monthly committee meetings and in some instances, working with other State Champions and the AIG Support team.
• Seek and pursue sponsors: Identify prospective federal and local state program sponsors
• Communication: Helping to draft communication materials for mentors and mentees.

Why Become a State Champion?
• Make a difference in the geoscience community by supporting career development.
• Gain valuable leadership and organisational skills.
• Network with other passionate geoscientists.
• Contribute to a program with a proven track record of success (over 200 mentor-mentee pairings since its inception).

Who can apply?
This is a great opportunity for AIG members who are interested in:
• Mentoring and supporting others in their careers.
• Contributing to a positive and engaging program.
• Building their leadership skills

We highly encourage previous state champions to apply!

How to Apply:
If you’re enthusiastic about mentoring and making a difference in the geoscience field, apply now through the application form: https://forms.office.com/r/XT7dt4qqmn. Nominations close Friday, 13 December 2024.

Nominations will be assessed by a steering committee who will select the best fit for each State Champion role.

JORC Committee invites public feedback of the draft JORC Code.

The Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) has released the draft JORC Code for public feedback through an online survey, seeking comment from stakeholders ahead of the final review and update of the JORC Code.

The public feedback period will be open for three months, closing 31st October 2024.

The survey allows for responses to be tailored to those elements of the code with which you have the most interaction, experience and interest and can be completed by both individuals and/or organisation entities.

In addition to the survey, JORC engagement events will be held in major centres and online from mid-August to end of September. The schedule of events is available here Draft JORC Code Consultation Events

JORC engagement events are being organised in co-ordination with the Parent Bodies AIG, AusIMM, and MCA, and will be advertised on the JORC Website and in member communications.

Your participation and feedback is encouraged.

2024 Bursary Applications

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists’ Student Bursary Program was initiated to promote and support geoscience education in Australia. The Bursary Program began in 2001 to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and, since then, the AIG has awarded over 250 bursaries to geoscience students in Australian universities. In 2024, the AIG is again offering bursaries to Honours, Postgraduate and Third Year geoscience students.

The 2024 Bursary awards, which have values between A$1000 and A$3000, are supported by the AIG nationally, and also by the generous support of individuals and organisations, including AIG Members.

Eligibility criteria and guidelines for bursary applications are given on pages 1, 2 and 3. A bursary application form is included as page 4.

VALMIN Committee vacancies: express your interest!

The ‘Australasian Code for Public Reporting of technical assessments and valuations of mineral assets’(the VALMIN Code) sets out requirements for the assessing and valuing mineral assets and securities for public reports  including those appended to prospectuses and independent expert reports. The VALMIN Code was first published in 1995, with subsequent editions published in 1997, 2005 and 2015. It forms a companion code to the JORC Code that is currently under a public review process.

The VALMIN Committee was established to develop and maintain the Code and comprises representatives in equal number from the two parent bodies: The Australian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (AusIMM) and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG). The Committee currently has a call for nominations to fill a number of positions and members are invited to submit an expression of interest (EOI). It is anticipated that a VALMIN Code update process will commence after release of the next JORC Code edition.

Participating in a committee is a rewarding experience and a great way to get involved with the AusIMM or AIG, help promote professional standards and meet new people working in the resources sector. This is a volunteer role and candidates must be financial members, be available to attend regular meetings via teleconference, and contribute towards the promotion and update of the Code.

It is intended to refer EOIs to the current committee who will then recommend appointments to the AusIMM and AIG Boards for approval. Candidates will be evaluated against criteria that include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Experience with the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) Listing Rules and Guidance, the Australian Corporations Act, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) Regulatory Guides;
    • VALMIN and/or JORC Code practitioner, including preparing technical assessments and valuations applying the VALMIN Code;
    • Experience in fields such as
      • feasibility study management
      • financial and securities analysis; or
      • environmental, social, governance (ESG) and risk management reporting.
    • Experience with tenement management and valuation codes in different jurisdictions is desirable but not essential.

If you believe you have the background and available time to give to this committee, please submit your expression of interest addressing the above criteria to contact@VALMIN.org by COB 20 November 2023.
